Whenever sidewalks are replaced in La Crosse, use the opportunity to replace cement sidewalk with a pourous surface that absorbs water when it rains.
I would love to see this in a variety of high traffic areas with a small sign so people can recognize it and learn why it is so important!
What I have heard is keeping the porous area clean of debris so it doesn't get "clogged up" over time is a challenge...I wonder if there are strategies the community could help with there?
Because water scarcity is one of the most urgent issues facing our planet and by collecting more water into the ground and water aquafers, we can ensure water preservation for all. This would also help to prevent flooding from run off.
I would love to learn more about this. Would you consider contacting Jay Odegaard at the Parks Dept? Maybe you could get on the Parks Board agenda and do an informational presentation. I can see funding as the biggest hurdle so knowing the costs and putting some numbers to this idea would be greatly beneficial.
It would be great to see this at least tested on some sidewalks to assess performance.
