Fund the creation and distribution of "help needed" signs to put on the front door of sick or elderly people who can't physically shovel snow. The signs would alert able-bodied neighbors to help dig them out after a heavy snowfall. Sometimes you just don't know who needs a helping hand in your neighborhood, especially if they are homebound without friends or family around to help them.
Would you also have volunteers organized to ensure those with signs actually receive the help? It would be disappointing to see someone have the sign out and then not receive the help.
This could also be helpful for raking, mowing, etc.
Would the sign maybe identify people as "vulnerable"...maybe a sign that is coded so not everyone would recognize it?
Would this put vulnerable people in jeopardy of their safety if it's advertised on their house? Maybe I watch too many crime shows but that could be a target for someone with malicious intent. If it were more of an "underground" network of volunteers, that may be safer.
I share similar concerns about those who could be considered "vulnerable". In addition will there be some type of tracking system to ensure that people are receiving services? Though the city employees can become very busy would there be potential opportunity to partner, maybe when hydrants are cleared? Or even thinking about students in the school districts and creating some type of community engagement program!
I love the simplicity of this idea Beth. An organization called Causeway Caregivers has "Snow Angles" who volunteer. Jacob and Ashley bring up some great considerations. I will give this some thought to see how this idea could move forward in a safe manner.
