Bring the zero target forward to 2030

Bring the zero target forward to 2030

The British government set a net zero target for 2050. Yet the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calls for decisive action within the next 10 years to avoid reaching our ecological tipping point of 1.5oC. We should listen to the science and bring the target forward.

Points

According to the IPCC, we need ‘deep emissions reductions’ and ‘far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society’ to stabilise global temperatures at 1.5oC. On our current track, we are heading to 3.1-3.7oC by 2100, which would spark ecological catastrophe. We have to align British policy with the urgency the science demands.
