Europe

Europe

EPOA (European Pride Organisers Association) will become the new InterPride region with the existing pride regions becoming part of EPOA. There are some additional decisions to make: The following countries will be added to this region: Russian, Belarus, Turkey, Israel, Georgia and Armenia.

Points

With this list we will follow the definition of the 'wider Europe' and include those countries with a strong focus on Europe.

Russia is partly Europe and partly Asian. However, the activists in Russia try to organize prides in Moscow and St. Petersburg and that is more focussed on Russia. There is a lot of attention from Europe for the pride movement in Russia.

Although Belarus belongs to the European continent. There is no pride development that we know of yet. It is often a 'forgotten' country in Europe. So it could also go to the so called "unrepresented" region.

Greenland is part of Europe, but is also close to Canada. There are no prides anymore in Greenland.

Turkey is predominantly a Muslim country that might be positioned better in MENA region.

With the additional countries the geographical area becomes very big.

Although the geographical area becomes big, the number of prides involved are predominantly based in the core of Europe.

Israel is based in the Middle-east but because of political reasons there is no collaboration possible with neighboring countries and in general the focus of Israel is already more on Europe then the Arabic world.

Although Turkey is predominantly a Muslim country and there is a focus on both Europe and Asia, the prides (used to) take place in the areas that are focussed on Europe. There is a lot of attention from Europe for pride development in Turkey. Turkey stil has the ambition to become member of the EU.

There has been vocalized concerns at the EPOA conference about Europe being represented as only one region. It may be valuable to engage with EPOA to identify how the may structure Europe into 1-3 regions.
